A qualified bricklayer normally holds the blue Skilled Worker card. CSCS lists the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations (Construction) and the Bricklayer apprenticeship as qualifying routes; the Level 3 NVQ in Trowel Occupations leads to the higher gold card.
Workers still working towards the qualification usually hold a red card: a Trainee card while registered on the NVQ, an Apprentice card on a recognised apprenticeship, or an Experienced Worker card (valid for one year, not renewable) for people with at least a year's recent experience who are registered on the NVQ. Experienced workers can complete the NVQ through an on-site assessment or an Experienced Worker Practical Assessment. The old Industry Accreditation route has closed.
A green Labourer card is not a substitute: CSCS states that skilled workers holding a Labourer card will be refused site access.
